Behind the Hollywood Sign

These long June days – when the sun doesn’t set until just after 8 pm – are perfect for hiking the Hollywood Hills in Griffith Park.

Last weekend we trekked up behind the Hollywood Sign on a gorgeous sunny day. Not too hot, great views of both the valley and the LA basins, and many happy hikers enroute. It doesn’t get much better than this – and only a 20 minute drive from Larchmont.

There are at least two ways to do this hike. You can drive to the top of Beachwood Canyon, park below the Sunset Ranch and start hiking – depending on your speed it’ll take approximately an hour to get to this spot. Or for a little longer, and even lovelier route, park at the top of Bronson Ave and hike up, heading west when you get to the first T in the path. Follow your fellow hikers for the full route. Take plenty of water and wear boots or sneakers – this route will take an hour and a half or two to get to the peak.
