A crowd of 150 concerned residents attended a meeting with the LAPD, CD 10 and the LA Department of Recreation and Parks at the Queen Anne Recreational Center gymnasium on Friday evening.
The recent gang-related shooting on Tuesday, May 29th at 7pm shook up local residents, school families and sports teams who utilize the park and many of whom were present at the park on the balmy summer evening.
Captain Eric Davis of the Wilshire Division led the meeting and took questions from a dozen people. “We believe the gang involved had no specific ties to Queen Anne park,” he told the crowd. “This gang incident started elsewhere and eventually moved to the park. This is generally a very safe area, due to the heavily used facilities, the commitment of neighborhood residents, the presence of league teams and regular LAPD patrols.”
According to Davis and Senior Lead Officer for the area, Officer Ruben Gonzales, gang investigators were brought in on-site that evening and collected excellent information from witnesses in the park who were very helpful in sharing specifics about the incident. “We are vert confident this investigation will be resolved quite quickly,” said Davis.
Davis and Gonzales reminded the public to call 911 immediately if they feel in danger from suspicious activity at the park, or contact Officer Gonzales directly via cell at 213-793-0715 , or the LAPD Wilshire Division Front Desk at 213-473-0476.
The City provided a counselor from the Crisis Response Team to discuss the effects of witnessing this type of violence on the children present at the park. Questions and comments were also heard from the Principal of Queen Anne Elementary and a representative from the Wilshire Girls Softball league which regularly uses the park for practice and games.
