The contents of so-called Youngwood Estate went on the auction block today as singer and “House of Davids” owner Norwood Young opened his Muirfield home to buyers and looky-loos eager to check out the goods. Not your everyday estate sale, this one featured free champagne, calming massages, a surprise visit by neighbor and actress Patricia Heaton, and Young singing a rendition of “I Did It My Way” behind the circular line-up of Davids on the front drive.
The Buzz spoke with one proud buyer who secured the famous “Black Santa” who has graced the Christmas decorating line up every holiday season, replete with a blanket of fake cotton snow. Pen Pendleton of Wilton Place said he was in the 4th group of attendees to get into the house, and was thrilled to find “the Black Santa sitting in the backyard all by himself. He wasn’t on the posted pricelist, so maybe no one knew he was there.” Pendleton said the Santa will probably grace the rooftop of his own home come Christmas, but today Santa would be getting a ride to his new home via the backseat of Pendleton’s convertible.
Young spoke to the crowd of approximately 70 people who were gathered in the front yard, most of who were fans of his style and shouted “We’ll miss you!” and “Why are you leaving?” He wanted to dispel the “myth” that he put up all the Davids in reaction to neighbors’ negative response to his decorating, and to say that he was glad he “…put HP on the map.”
Missed it? You can still get a piece of the action tomorrow Sunday Oct 16, 9am-4pm, or next weekend Saturday 9-4 or Sunday 12-5. The “hanging acrylic dining tables” are a steal at $35 a piece, but the Michael Jackson Tribute Glove will set you back $5000. The David statues themselves will be put up for sale via an auction: you need to speak with the estate sellers onsite to submit your name to be included in the auction.
