Brew Me a Song

Do you ever wonder if that barista foaming your latte is really a chanteuse in disguise? Well, we did after seeing a sign up on the door of the local coffee hangout Bricks & Scones on upper Larchmont.

The sign announced Jack Diaz would be performing at Hotel Cafe this Friday Oct 7, and the staff confirmed that Jack was a regular – employee, that is. Expecting to find a young man behind the counter, we were instead greeted by a quirky and confident young woman (nee Jacqueline Diaz) who has her first album out and is thrilled about the Hotel Cafe gig. She sings all her own original material which is indie folk with jazz influences, much of it in such a high range the birds must think they have a new member to their flock. You can listen to a few cuts off Jack’s album on her site.

Hotel Cafe is known as one of the best breaking-grounds for up-and-coming singer/songwriters.  It’s a small intimate place with a stage at the front door and tables packed so tightly it makes you feel like you just might be in the Village instead of on Cahuenga Blvd. The vibe is seriously music-oriented so don’t expect to do a lot of talking, and on almost any given night you may see between 4-6 artists each doing a set.

You can see Jack Diaz perform on Friday, Oct 7, at 7 pm, $10 at the door, 1623 1/2 Cahuenga Blvd. That is, if you don’t catch her singing behind the counter at Bricks & Scone first!
