Almost Time for Summer Camp

You may have kids like mine, who enjoy activities that are a little less sporty and more, well, off the beaten path. The following camps offer everything from classes in wizardry to sketch comedy:

The Actor’s Gang provides two one-week intensive camps to teens and pre-teens at the Ivy Substation in Culver City. The teen (12-17) intensive runs from June 25 – June 29 and the pre-teen intensive runs from July 30 – August 3. Both camps operate from 9am – 3pm and cost $350 for the week. Students are taught a technique based on Commedia dell’arte by members of the Company. Further information: The Actor’s Gang

The World Through the Eyes of J.R.R. Tolkien is a fantasy writing camp being taught at Carpenter Community Charter School in Studio City. The camp is taught from 9am to 2pm, July 9 – July 27. The cost is $325 per week and financial aid is available. Students will develop and write their own stories based on the works of Tolkien. Further information: [email protected]

Stage Time Los Angeles is an acting camp taught at Dorris Place Elementary School in Elysian Heights. Two week-long camps are offered. The first one runs from July 9 – 13, for ages 6-9. The second week offered runs from July 16 – July, for ages 9-12. Both camps operate from 9am to 3pm and cost $225 for the week. The younger camp concentrates on theater games, while the older camp works on a given script. No acting experience is necessary. Further information: Stage Time Los Angeles 

Whimsic Alley offers a wizardry school for children who are 7 and older. The Fantasy store and party place is located on Wilshire Blvd in the Miracle Mile and camps run June 18 – 29, July 16-27, and August 13 – 24, from 10am – 4pm. Each camp casts $700 for a two week session. In the great hall, kids will take classes in spells, alchemy, and dragonology, just to name a few. Further information: 310-453-2370.

Second City offers youth and teen boot camps at their training center on Hollywood Blvd. Parents can choose from three camps that are taught in age appropriate classes for kids from 8 – 18. Camps will be held June 25-July 13, July 16 – August 3, and August 6 – August 24 from 10:30am -4:30pm. Each camp costs $750. Kids will learn improvisation and sketch comedy in a collaborative and playful environment. Further information: Second City.
