Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Pilgrim School students, with their big hearts and inventive minds, have decided to support Hope-Net this year. Pilgrim in an independent Pre-K through Grade 12 school, situated ten minutes from Hancock Park, at 6th St. and Commonwealth.

Hope-Net is a non-profit agency than runs 14 food pantries in this area.  Many of our neighbors are “food insecure” – meaning they are not always sure where their next meal is coming from.  Hope-Net distributes supplementary food.  Last year we handed out 350,000 bags of groceries.  The two pantries closest to Hancock Park are at St. James’ Church (Wilshire and St. Andrews) and Wilshire Presbyterian (3rd and Western).

Hope-Net gets most of its food from the LA Regional Food Bank, downtown.  The supplies of food at Food Bank have been reduced due to government cutbacks and we need to find additional sources of food.  I mentioned our predicament to Dr. Mark Brooks, head of Pilgrim School, and he immediately committed the School to help.

Pilgrim is off and running with a food drive at their back-to-school night – each family is being asked to bring a can of tuna.  Some of the high school students will deliver the food to a Hope-Net pantry the next day.  The School has many more ideas for the year.

A busy day, homework, and time to think of others less fortunate – now that makes students we can all be proud of!

If you would like to make a donation (food or money) to Hope-Net, please call the Hope-Net office, 213-389-9949, xtn. 10.
