Happy Birch Preschool will open September 4th in a tidy bungalow just north of Larchmont Village. A new option for parents of pre-schoolers in the area where early education options are tight, there are still a few spaces for incoming kids on the start day of September 4th.
Across the street from Gold’s Gym, Happy Birch aims to provide a social constructivist philosophy in educating 2-5 year olds. With a focus on “exploring and experiencing the environment first-hand to acquire and test their knowledge,” the school encourages kids to become self-motivated problem solvers. According to founder Dr. George Rand, “This way of working can be especially powerful in the early development of language and cognition as well as mathematics, natural history and social studies. We also acknowledge the importance of many kinds of artistic expression including visual media, music and movement, as well as other areas such as decorative arts, gardening and food preparation.”
Building Happy Birch was the dream, and now reality of a married team of educators: Mali and George Rand. They purchased the once-dilapidated property and renovated it from the ground up, turning the California bungalow and its yard into a colorful and serene oasis in the middle of the Media District. Mali has degrees in education and business, and has done research on child development. George was a professor in the graduate program in child development at Columbia University Teacher’s College and at UCLA’s Department ofArchitecture + Urban Design. He is also a clinical psychologist with training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The lead teacher at Happy Birch, Kelly Cooper, has 25 years experience teaching in early childhood education and counseling.
