I’m going out on a limb and guessing that there will be a blimp or two in the sky this weekend…
I don’t know about anyone else, but I never tire of seeing the blimp. For me, it’s always a big deal and I have to point it out to whoever is with me. I can’t get over the awesomeness of it – to see this big, quiet ship in the sky. Basically it’s a giant pod of helium holding up a small compartment – called a gondola – with only 7 seats. So it must be pretty special to ride in one.
Of course, our neighborhood provides the perfect venue for viewing!
Goodyear has an active fleet of 3 blimps – and anyone who has ever gone south on the 405 just past the 110 knows  – Carson is home to The Spirit of America,  one of the 3*. The blimps are all about advertising and taking aerial shots of big events – views we take for granted when we’re watching TV.
This weekend, The Golden Globes are likely to give the team at Goodyear (or one of the other blimp advertisers) a reason to soar over the LA/Hollywood/Beverly Hills skies.
The Los Angeles Magazine January issue has a quick article about the blimp. It’s full of interesting facts, including tips on how to catch a ride! This bucket list item is within reach – especially with all the business you’re probably giving your local tire store due to pot holes.  Personally, I’ve changed 2 tires and plugged holes in 2 more in the past 3 months, so I am working that connection for a ride over The Oscars!

*the picture above shows 4 blimps…this was the inaugural ride for The Spirit of America.  It’s likely one of the other blimps was being retired.
