Film: The Mask (1961) in 3-D!

March 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

“Put the mask on, now!” for Julian Roffman’s restored psychotronic 3-D classic — and PRS’s first 3-D screening!

The Philosophical Research Society is excited to team up with 3-D Space, the LA based nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of the history of stereoscopic imaging and the advancement of current and future 3-D arts and sciences, for our first 3-D screening! For our first multidimensional outing, we’ll be putting on THE MASK (1961, not 1994!), an unforgettable experience in psychotronic horror!

Notable as the first Canadian produced 3-D horror film, THE MASK is a psychological trip into what evil lurks in the subconscious mind. An ancient Aztec mask causes the wearer to experience psychotic breaks of violence and death. Also released under the title EYES OF HELL, the picture was produced and directed by Julian Roffman (The Bloody Brood; The Glove).

After the shocking death of a disturbed patient, psychiatrist Dr. Allan Barnes (Paul Stevens) comes into possession of the ancient tribal mask that supposedly drove the young man to his doom. When Barnes puts on the mask, he is assailed with nightmarish visions of monsters, occultists, and ritual torture. Believing that the mask has opened a portal to the deepest recesses of his mind, the doctor continues to explore this terrifying new psychic world — even as the mask reveals a latent violence in Barnes’ nature that threatens those closest to him.

Shot in Toronto on a shoestring budget, THE MASK (retitled Eyes of Hell for its American release) claims the distinction of being the first feature-length Canadian horror movie. While the bulk of its eerie plot is shot in stunning, 2-D black and white, Roffman turns the act of wearing the anaglyph 3D glasses into part of the theatrical experience: when Barnes’ voice intones the immortal words “Put the mask on, now!,” the audience puts on their glasses to witness the doctor’s visions, a riot of stereoscopic 3-D psychedelic imagery rendered in bright, blazing color. These 3-D scenes were shot in 35mm dual-strip using two cameras – one for the left eye and one for the right eye – and the stereo photography is outstanding.

For this special screening, Eric Kurland of 3-D Space will join us to present a beautiful restoration of this wholly singular cinematic experience, for which 3-D Film Archive used the original dual-strip negatives to restore and align the 3-D sequences, so they look even better now than in their original release!

Buy a ticket, take the ride, and “Put The Mask On, Now!”
