Dear Hancock Park Residents and Surrounding Neighbors,

The developers of the property located at 6101-6117 W. Melrose (the corner of northwest Melrose and Seward) are seeking approval to build a 5 story entertainment oriented office building with extensive outdoor decking immediately adjacent to the one- and two-story single-family residential uses west of the site. Their plan will replace the single story retail shops along Melrose.

In order to build the 5 story, 77 ft building, the developer must be granted – by the City a Height District Change; changing the current allowable height from 45 feet to 77 feet.

It is imperative that everyone who comments mention repeatedly that an environmental impact report is required to analyze the impacts on the John C. Fremont library (National Register of Historic Places) and the adjacent historic preservation overlay zone. It isn’t enough to mention there might be an impact, you have to specifically say/write an EIR is required.

If this height change and currently proposed building design is allowed, all surrounding residences both north and south of Melrose would be severely impacted and the entire nature of the surrounding communities would be forever changed. These changes, if allowed, would set a dangerous precedent for the scale and design of future development along Melrose.

 

This is NOT a request for approval to build housing – this is a request to build over-height out-of-scale luxury office space.

The City Planning Commission will take testimony from all the surrounding neighborhoods and interested parties before making a final determination.
