When Chevalier’s Books staff arrived at the store on Tuesday morning, they had an unpleasant surprise. The glass front door to the shop had been smashed. Fortunately, the shattered glass held in place so nothing was stolen from inside the store, and no one was in the store at the time.
“If you’re looking for an excuse to stop by & support LA’s oldest independent bookstore, we could use the moral support! 💓📚  Last night our front door was smashed in. Luckily all of our books are safe & no staff was at the store, but it’s a sad sight to see our beloved space damaged like this,” posted chevaliersbooks on Instagram.Â
“We have really appreciated all the support from everyone,” manager Katie Orphan told the Buzz  when we stopped by this morning. “Many of our regular customers have stopped by to show their support.”
CD13 Field Deputy George Hakopiants also stopped in this morning to check in and offer assistance.
For now, the glass door is being repaired and police reports have been filed with LAPD. At this point, there isn’t any specific information on who did this and why, but security camera footage is being reviewed, so hopefully more information will be available soon. This is the second recent break-in on Larchmont. Earlier this year, computer equipment was stolen from Kreation Juice. Skylight Books in Los Feliz also reported on Instagram that its window had been broken recently, but that now seems to be a random coincidence with no apparent connection to the incident on Larchmont.
In the meantime, the Chevalier’s Books is open as usual and appreciates your business!
