Garcetti Temporarily “Suspends” Farmers Markets

Yesterday, responding to complaints from around the city that farmers markets are still attracting unhealthy numbers of people, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that all such markets will be temporarily “suspended”:

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti at yesterday’s daily COVID-19 briefing

“We have seen images of dangerously crowded farmers markets –– so I’m announcing the temporary suspension of farmers markets pending City review of physical distancing plans needed to keep communities safe. We will review plans immediately so markets can stay open this week.”

Markets around the city have been scrambling to submit traffic and distancing plans for their operations, and it seems that the city has already begun responding to at least some of the applicants.  While we haven’t yet heard back from the managers of our Larchmont Farmers Market, so don’t know yet if their circulation plans have been submitted or approved, we did see this announcement from the Wellington Square Farmers Market, near Crenshaw and Washington Blvds., just before noon today:

“Well that was quick! We got our approval to stay open!!!!! Please please please be respectful of the situation and agree to our rules. Social distancing is an absolute must! Hand washing before entering is an absolute must! This is the only way we can continue to serve you. Sunday 9-11:30…This is so exciting!! Keep up the good work everyone and hopefully we can get back to normal sooner than later”

We will be sure to let you know what the status of our Larchmont Market is, as soon as we hear it.
