Jonas Wood at David Kordansky Gallery

Buzz art writer Megan Derry stepped into the world of Jonas Wood at David Kordansky Gallery, located on the corner of S La Brea Ave and Edgewood Pl. (appointment only – through March 5).

Editor’s note: “As a February Frieze descends upon the City of Los Angeles, do yourself a favor and beat the chill,” recommends Buzz art contributor Megan Derry. Instead of the celebrity art scene, Derry likes to check out our local galleries, which are here year-round and support our local artists.

“I think there are so many great local galleries large and small that we can enjoy,” Derry advised.

In today’s post, she steps into the world of Jonas Wood at David Kordansky Gallery, located at the corner of S. La Brea Ave. and Edgewood Pl. (by appointment only; through March 5).

Jonas Wood’s show, entitled Plants and Animals, runs the gamut from artfully naive pencil drawings of personal environments and subjects to large bold canvases that feel four-dimensional in scope and emotion. Wood revisits several subjects in different scales and media, thereby creating an intimacy and familiarity. When viewed at a distance, the larger works appear flat and almost collage-like, but if you walk slowly towards the renderings, you will find yourself going deeper and deeper into a lyrical world, discovering delicately painted flora of vibrant color that you feel you could brush aside as you continue into the work.

Wood, who works and resides in Los Angeles, creates imagery that demonstrates a deep love for the world around him. This show will make you appreciate both his world and, potentially, your own as well.
