On Monday, July 18 (6:30 p.m.) and Tuesday, July 19 (11:30 a.m.), community members will be able to hear updated proposals on the Melrose Pedestrian Improvement Project from StreetsLA.
This fairly limited grant-funded project would provide improvements to bus stops and sidewalks (and, most specifically, the pedestrian areas adjacent to transit stops) along Melrose between Fairfax and Highland. The proposed improvements include:
- Sidewalk widening on one block of Melrose between Ogden and Orange Grove
- Pedestrian curb ramps at all corners in the project area
- Lighting improvements at 12 bus stops
- Sidewalk replacement at 12 bus stops
- New shade trees and enlarged tree wells along the full length of the project
(Note that this is NOT the same as the Uplift Melrose project, a much more extensive and controversial streetscape reimagining, which was considered and rejected earlier in 2020).
Back in December 2020, the City of Los Angeles began holding community outreach meetings on the project. At the second set of public meetings, however, in May, 2021, the proposal ran into some major resistance from both stakeholders and members of the Melrose Business Improvement District, who did not like the concepts presented for new signage along the improvement corridor (see our report here, or listen to a recording here).
In the 15 months since that meeting, little has been heard from the project, but this coming week community members will be able to hear updated proposals from StreetsLA. To register for one of the online sessions, click one of the meeting date links above, or scan one of the QR codes in the flier below for the meeting you’re interested in.
