Breaking News: SB 50 Blocked in Committee

A “Stop SB 50” sign in Windsor Square.

The Los Angeles Times has just reported that SB 50, the controversial state housing bill, was blocked this morning by the California State Senate Appropriations Committee.

As we reported on Tuesday, the bill had been moved to the Committee’s Suspense File, with other bills that would have a significant impact on state finances.  And the Committee chose today not to pass the bill out of the file and on from that point.

Victor Ruiz-Cornejo, Communications Director for SB 50’s author, State Senator Scott Wiener, told the Buzz earlier this week that if the Appropriations Committee did not move the bill forward, it would be considered dead for the remainder of this session, and any similar measures would have to be re-introduced next year before they could once again begin moving through the legislative process.

We’ll have more on this story in coming days.
