Thanks to a donation of $1,000 from the Windsor Square-Hancock Park Historical Society to the Friends of Wilshire branch Library, the library’s courtyard is taking on a new life. The funds were raised at the Society’s tour of Craftsman homes on St. Andrews Place, held last September.
Jennifer Noble, branch librarian, said Friends has used the money to buy colorful plants, paints for patio furniture and plans to have an arborist reshape the trees in the space.
Noble said the courtyard is now being used by patrons, and she has been holding teen volunteer programs weekly. “The teens painted a bench that we had in storage in the garden and are busy planning for the summer reading clubwhich will incorporate a gardening element with all of the vegetables we’ll be growing. We’ve gotten so many compliments and our volunteers are very happy to have some funds,” she added.
On Saturday, May 12th, the library will be having a Soil Renewal Volunteer Day. Projects include replacing the top layer of soil in the garden beds, moving the raised beds and moving a citrus tree.
