City Releases New Draft of Baseline Mansionization Ordinance

On Thursday, April 21, the City of Los Angeles released a new draft of proposed revisions to its Baseline Mansionization Ordinance, the law that regulates the size and scale of new and replacement homes on city lots.  The original BMO, intended to curb the construction of oversized replacement homes in existing neighborhoods, proved to contain several clauses that actually allowed such projects to proliferate, prompting neighbors and City officials to push for revisions.  A first draft of the revised BMO was released last fall by the City Planning Department, which held a series of community meetings to collect comments that were then used to craft the second draft released last week.  The new draft is scheduled to be forwarded to the City Planning Commission and discussed at a CPC hearing in June.

Between now and the CPC hearing, however, the Planning Department will once again hold a series of public meetings to introduce and collect feedback on the latest BMO draft.  People who are interested in learning more about the BMO, and the latest round of proposed changes, are encouraged to attend one of the four upcoming meetings:

In order to be considered in the Planning Department’s report to the City Planning Commission, comments should be received by June 10, 2016. Comments received after June 10 should be addressed directly to the City Planning Commission. Case numbers CPC-2015-3484-CA and ENV-2015-4197-EAF should be referenced in all comments.
