Bone broth, one of the latest trends in health food, has been available in the Miracle Mile neighborhood at the Osso Good Cafe at 8036 West 3rd Street for a few months now. But we stopped by their “Yappy Hour” earlier this week, where lucky dogs could sample some tasty new frozen treats made from bone broth for dogs, the latest addition to Osso Good’s product line.
Originally from Wisconsin, co-founder Meredith Cochran used to work in cardiac health care. But she wanted to focus more on prevention and shifted her focus from western medicine to eastern medicine by becoming a certified acupuncturist. Along the way, she also learned about the benefits of bone broth.
Four years ago, Cochran left health care and moved to the West coast to focus on creating a clean, organic and healthy bone broth product for consumers. Osso Good broth has no added salt and contains fewer than five ingredients, explained Cochran. Initially, her small batch soups and broths were sold directly to consumers online. After she was approached by someone who wanted a private label broth, Cochran was connected to investors who helped her expand and set up a commercial kitchen operation to scale up her production. With that additional capacity, Osso Good organic broths and paleo soups are now available at Bristol Farms and the frozen food sections of other retail stores.
Cochran said start-ups like hers are really changing the food game by offering more choices to consumers who are looking for “clean” foods made with quality ingredients and no additives. Osso Good makes vegan and gluten-free soups.
Four months ago, Cochran relocated from the Bay area to LA to open her first cafe, which offers grab-and-go soups, smoothies and gluten-free bone broth waffles.
“I love this neighborhood. It’s so walkable, and we are right between the Beverly Center and the Grove,” said Cochran of her location on West 3rd Street. “All the businesses have been so welcoming.”
