The Los Angeles Department of Transportation is holding an Open House to show off the LADOT Traffic Control Center’s Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control (ATSAC) System. The event takes place on Wednesday, May 29th from 12pm-3pm.

ATSAC is the largest system for automating and  controlling traffic in the world. The idea for ATSAC eminated out of the 1984 Olympics when City leaders needed to manage what was expected to be a crippling  surge of traffic.

ATSAC optimizes all kinds of traffic across Los Angeles – traffic lights, pedestrian signals and train signals/traffic.  They have about 22 traffic controllers who staff the ATSAC Center from 6am – 7pm Monday – Friday. The controllers look for demand on the traffic system and adjust light green times based on heaviest load.

If you’ve ever been curious about how the City of Los Angeles keeps traffic moving, do take advantage of this special opportunity! The Open House is open to all and is free.

Thanks to Councilman Tom LaBonge’s office for sharing this event!
