Dia de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever Cemetery gives families an opportunity to celebrate the ancient tradition of life by remembering their departed loved ones.
The families arrive Friday evening to participate in a ceremony and start setting up their altars. Â The altars must incorporate the four main elements of nature – earth, wind, water and fire. Family members burn incense in order to commemorate their pre-Columbian history. They use orange and yellow marigolds as decorations to help spirits wander back. And pictures help to remember the loved ones being honored.
And the altars at Hollywood Forever are really great! Likely because there are some big prizes for the best altars. Organizers award $3,000 each for the following 3 categories:
- Best Theme of the Event Altar
- Best Traditional Altar
- Best Contemporary Altar
On Saturday, the Greater LA community is invited to come view the altars and enjoy the celebration and traditions of Latino LA. In addition to walking around to see all the altars, attendees will enjoy art, festive music, cultural dance, costumes, face painting, delicious Mexican food and lots of people watching.
Tickets are $15 (cash). There are various parking lots around the perimeter of the cemetery …but we recommend walking. Event information indicates No Bikes. Scout bike parking out in advance…it’s likely that there are places you can lock your bike in the area.
