In these turbulent and too often divisive times, it’s always refreshing to find activities that bring the community together to improve our shared spaces for the long-term future.  On Saturday, November 12, the students, parents and staff of Melrose Avenue Math, Science and Technology Magnet school did just that – planting 16 trees that will beautify the campus for many years to come.
The project was made possible by what parent beautification team member Sarita Singh called a “generous grant” from Tree People and the Los Angeles Beautification Team, both of which provided training and assistance at Saturday’s event. Singh said, “We have been working with TreePeople and LABT for a year to get this project to fruition. This grant is only available to Title 1 schools and we were fortunate enough to find out about it just in the nick of time.”
Pink’s Hot Dogs and Trader Joe’s also got involved on Saturday, with food donations for the volunteers (Pink’s family members are Melrose Ave. School alumni, according to Singh.)
