RFK Mural Festival Brings Works of Famous Artists to Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools

Branded Arts, a Los Angeles-based organization that offers artistic services for communities, corporations and public schools, is currently producing the RFK Mural Festival, a major art and mural project at the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools, 701 S. Catalina St. (Wilshire & Catalina). (The campus is a collection of six autonomous public schools serving grades K-12 on the site of the former Ambassador Hotel, where Kennedy was assassinated in 1968.)

In all, 28 artists have been commissioned to paint a series of murals throughout the campus this week (May 23-27, 2016), with the most prominent being a 40-foot high portrait of the school’s namesake by Shepard Fairey.

rfkmuralThe Festival also features exhibitions, installations and workshops by a large contingent of other artists, with students involved via workshops and seminars hosted by the participating artists.  In addition, there will be lectures and panel discussions, film screenings and guided tours of the newly created murals, as well as opportunities for students to exhibit their own artwork alongside artists such as Tim Biskup, D*Face and Erik Jones in the Paul Schrade Library Gallery.

According to Branded Arts, the art and mural projects “aim to send an inspirational and positive message to kids ranging from kindergarten to the 12th grade.”  The project is a collaboration with LAUSD Local District Central staff under the guidance of Superintendent Roberto Antonio Martinez.

The week will be capped with a grand reception, open to the public, on Friday, May 27, from 5-11 p.m.  It will include:
