Cool Neutra Platform House For Sale

3737 Oakfield Drive is for sale for $1.5 million

Have you ever wanted to trade your safe, flat lot for a super cool platform house with a view?

Well, here’s your chance to check out a Mid-Century Modern Platform House designed by Richard Neutra for the Stone-Fisher development company, on Oakfield Drive in Sherman Oaks.  The house on the market was featured in Dwell Magazine.

According to Dwell, the 1,800 square foot home is located at 3737 Oakfield Drive and incorporates classic elements of Neutra’s California homes, including broad expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass, a simple, open floor plan, and a strong horizontal emphasis. (We learned about it from the LA Times Hot Property, which we read religiously!)

3737 Oakfield Drive is one of 17 platform homes on Oakfield Drive in Sherman Oaks

Oakfield Drive in Sherman Oaks contains seventeen Platform Houses that were considered ground-breaking (no pun intended) engineering feats. The homes are built on massive platforms that cantilever out over the edge of a steep slope, looking down onto the valley below…and they’ve become part of LA’s visual architectural history. Appearing to be held up by thin, matchstick posts, the homes are often called “stilt” houses. While not much to look at from the street, they were designed to provide breathtaking views once you’re inside the door.

According to the LA Conservancy, “the homes were completed between 1962 and 1966, these houses look like typical Mid-Century Modern buildings from the street side, with overhanging flat roofs, stucco and wood cladding, and simple window openings. But the view from the side or across Beverly Glen Canyon reveals the majority of each building seems to float in the air, supported by tall, narrow metal posts that seem far too insubstantial to do the work they are so easily doing.”

Pretty cool, right?
