I confess, Mother’s Day is not one of my favorites holidays. I always thought it was kind of a phony celebration made up to sell stuff. (However, some of my favorite people are in the retail business and are really struggling now so please, please go buy something! And you can check our story on local retailers for some ideas, too.)
And once I got married, it just got worse. But when I was lucky enough to have my own children, I really realized how silly it was. My children were, and still are, such a gift. Not the kind of gift you buy, but rather the kind to celebrate for being lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time in the universe to receive them.
This Mother’s Day is the first one without my mom. We were blessed to have her with us for almost 91 years, another gift bestowed upon us. So this year, I am going to celebrate all the ways my mom and other moms influenced and supported me. I am thankful to be able to see her legacy in my family.
I’m also thankful for special moms, like Jennifer Levin and Helen Eisenberg (and all the gals at Hang Out Do Good) who inspire us to take better care of our most vulnerable neighbors. They have made more than 3,000 bag lunches in their Bagged Lunch Drive. Everyone is welcome to join their effort, it’s a great way to channel your inner mother!
