Weekend Closures of Wilshire Blvd. Ending Ahead of Schedule

New concrete decking at the intersection of Wilshire and Sycamore.

The full weekend closures of Wilshire Blvd., from La Brea Ave. to Highland Ave., will be coming to an end as of 2 a.m. Sunday, October 9.  The closures were originally scheduled for a total of 22 weekends, to facilitate the installation of concrete decking that will – in turn – allow the excavation, tunneling and underground construction of the new Wilshire-La Brea subway station.  But Metro announced on Friday, October 7, that the work is being completed this weekened…six weeks ahead of schedule.

According to Metro:

As of 2 a.m. Sunday, October 9th, La Brea decking will be complete. There will be no more full weekend closures for La Brea decking moving forward! The project, anticipated to take 22 weekends, will finish in 16 weekends, 6 weeks earlier than expected!

The statement went on to say:

The next phase of work will include station excavation, deck opening deliveries, and street restoration. Under the decking, station excavation will occur continuously until tunneling begins. Excavation will happen from the staging yards and the majority of removed soils will be transported off-site. The design-builder will also be delivering materials under the decking throughout the project. This will require temporarily opening the deck panels to lower materials under a non-peak hour lane closure.

Metro has said in previous communications that after installation of the decking, no further full street closures should be required for the duration of the subway construction project.  There will be more full closures at the end of construction, however, when the decking is removed and the normal street surface is restored.  That work should take about as long as the decking installation…but won’t be happen until about 2023.
