Recent Boston University grad and Hancock Park resident Anne Kim received the Bernard Kutner Award from Boston University (BU) College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College at the annual Senior Awards Reception in May. The award is given to the student who exemplifies the ideals of Sargent College through excellence of scholarship, high moral character, and outstanding service to the school and community, as well as loyalty, service to one’s fellow students, and exemplary potential as a health care professional.

Kim graduated with a Bachelor of Science in human physiology and a minor in public health and hopes to continue on to medical school in a year.

We spoke to Kim who is back home working part time as a scribe at a local hospital emergency department branch where she helps physicians record observations and vital information as they are seeing each patient. Kim worked as a scribe in Tufts Medical Center Emergency Department where she interacted lots of medical practitioners and patients from diverse communities.

“That experience really reinforced my commitment to medicine,” Kim told the Buzz.

It also inspired her to create a children’s book to help young children deal with the stress of going to see a doctor.  Working with her roommate Ioana Moldovan, they created a book based on data collected from surveys of pediatricians. Using a comic book visual style, The book incorporates the practice of mindfulness, a tool Kim’s co author learned about in her work with diabetes patients where mindfulness, breathing exercises and positive imagery has been successfully used to help address chronic symptoms.

The book has been distributed to hospitals and clinics in the Boston and Kim is hoping to give it to a local hospital in Los Angeles.

“Though the book price fluctuates because its on Amazon,” Kim told the Buzz, but I can offer it in bulk to hospitals and clinics for about $6 each through [email protected]; our goal isn’t to generate profit, but to help kids manage their stress and anxiety with doctor’s visits!”

Kim grew up in the neighborhood attending St. James School then Harvard Westlake High School. Congratulations and welcome home!
