Pascale Marill and Associates: When Big Designs Come in Small Packages

Transitional design in a live-work space at Country Club Manor in Hancock Park

Sponsored Post: My introduction to working in the Larchmont area was a recent project at the historical Country Club Manor. With extensive experience in historical architecture in the Bay Areas’ prestigious neighborhoods of Pacific Heights, Presidio, and many others, I could not have been more pleased for the opportunity. We had quite the challenge since this was not the typical 6,000 square foot home of Pacific Heights with unlimited space. Instead, it was downsizing from a 3,500 square foot home to a 1,400 square foot pied-à-terre for a retirement life filled with travel…and large furniture!

As everything in this world, projects comes in all shapes and sizes. I enjoy them all! Sometimes the most exciting puzzle to solve is that perfect woman-cave, nursery, home office, recording studio or cedar hot tub. My design aesthetic incorporates historical, traditional, transitional, midcentury, and contemporary elements.

When working on a new project, I typically start with questionnaires to help clients get their thoughts flowing in order to give me a clearer idea of what they are looking for in their newly designed space. The questions address the overall master plan, including kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and any additional spaces.

Once the questionnaires are completed by each family member involved in the project, we meet as a group at the site to review their responses and brainstorm ideas. From there, I suggest they start an ideabook / board on a picture book site such as or Pinterest. This allows us to start the dialogue regarding details, colors and materials in order to help us to hone in on the style for their renovation. We then create drawings to illustrate the design concepts and begin with the massing of the building, elevations and design details. We work in both 2 and 3D representations so that clients can fully envision the end product.

So when you’re considering your options, we’d love to hear from you!
