A few years ago, Hancock Park neighbor Bebe Flynn had an eye-opening experience at Meals on Wheels.
After spending a day delivering food to those in need, she learned that a huge percentage of seniors who own pets share their meals with them because they can’t afford pet food. Often, they give the food to their pets before feeding themselves. Of course this means neither the person nor the pet is getting adequate nutrition. Bebe left that day, determined to help solve this problem.
Already a skilled baker and successful entrepreneur (having helped build cutting-edge TCHO Chocolate), it did not take her long to get started on a socially driven business model that could help raise money for Meals on Wheels West. Flynn tweaked some favorite family cookie recipes and created Miss Lilly’s Trading Company – a gourmet cookie and brownie business that donates a portion of the proceeds to provide seniors in need with food and veterinary care for their pets.
Thanks to some delicious gourmet cookies and brownies and a social mission that connected with corporate decision makers, Flynn quickly had distribution at Saks Fifth Avenue, Whole Foods, Gelson’s, Bristol Farms and other specialty retailers throughout Southern California and Arizona. And of course, Larchmont Wine & Cheese right here in the neighborhood.
Today Miss Lilly’s is a thriving company, expanding its retail presence nationally and featuring a line of signature gift tins on the website. In addition, Flynn has started a line of natural pet treats, which are carried in Southern California at all 14 Centinela Pet Food & Supplies locations, at Tailwaggers and at Bristol Farms. A portion of all proceeds go to The Miss Lilly’s Pet Program at Meals on Wheels West.
It’s great to see this local entrepreneur have success. And it’s easy to see why… there’s nothing better than eating a scrumptious cookie and helping a great cause at the same time.Â
