The family of Nico Linesch, who tragically died in an accident in January of 2017, are hosting an evening of music and memories at a private home in Hancock Park on Saturday, June 2 in the evening featuring the music of composer Mohammed Fairouz who will play piano and conduct a string quartet, performing his original compositions with an interfaith focus.
Mr. Fairouz is one of the most frequently performed, commissioned, and recorded composers working today. Hailed by The New York Times as “an important new artistic voice” and by BBC World News as “one of the most talented composers of his generation,” his large-scale works engage major geopolitical and philosophical themes with persuasive craft and a marked seriousness of purpose.
Mr. Fairouz, a friend of Nico’s from college days where the two shared a deep love of music, approached the family and offered to perform the concert to benefit the scholarship the Linesch family established in their son’s honor.
Inspired by the outpouring of support from friends, the family created the Nico Linesch Legacy Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation to support the Nico Linesch Boundary Crossing Scholarship. The concert is the first of what they hope will be an annual celebration of Nico’s birthday. Funds raised at the concert will support the scholarship fund.
The Nico Linesch Boundary Crossing Scholarship is managed by the California Student Sustainability Coalition. Nico was a leader in this organization as an undergraduate at UC Davis and he remained active until his death. He loved the environment and his work was dedicated to a futuristic vision of sustained and healthy urban transportation systems.
The family is honoring Nico’s memory with grants to graduate students who exemplify this kind of boundary-crossing work. These students will engage in internships at government agencies or non-profit organizations focusing on environmental sustainability, public health, and/or transportation.
Tickets are available for a suggested tax-deductible contribution of $100 or more per person to the Fund. Include name of attendee(s) in the Message box. The family will email concert location following receipt of your donation. If you can’t make it but would like to support the Fund, donations can be made here.
