On Larchmont with Ayva Severy

Ayva Severy and her mom met us on Larchmont to talk about her role as Andrea Huh Garcia on The Garcias now streaming on HBO Max

“What’s it like to be cast in a TV sitcom at the age of 10?” That’s the question we posed to Larchmont area resident Ayva Severy when we met her and her mom on Larchmont Blvd. last week.

“It’s great,” Ayva told us. “I am so grateful to be part of a great show.”

Severy just completed the first season of The Garcias, now available on HBO Max. Thanks to Ayva’s mom, who also grew up in the neighborhood, we got a chance to visit with the ten year-old actress and hear what it was like to be cast as the character Andrea Huh Garcia in the family television series, The Garcias.

The new show is a reboot of the Nickelodeon series The Brothers Garcia, which was the first English-language sitcom to have an all Latino cast and creative team. In the new show, created by Jeff Valdez, the brothers are 15 years older. Two are tech entrepreneurs, one is an astronaut living on the International Space Station, and their sister is an aspiring TV news reporter in San Antonio, Texas. The show is set at a fancy beach house in Mexico where the grown up Garcia children are gathered with their children and the grandparents for a summer vacation. The entire first season was shot in Mexico over three months last summer, allowing cast and crew to work safely following COVID-19 protocols.

Like her television family, Ayva’s family is fully supportive and actively helped her realized her acting dreams. Even to the point of going on family auditions during COVID.

“I have always wanted to be on television is a series,” Ayva told us. “I started auditioning for commercials and I thought, “this is so much fun,” then I started doing a few short films. When I got the call back for the show, I was so excited, I almost cried.”

Ayva told us she got called back in for a “chemistry read” with the other 12 actors. Ayva explained the whole process of reading the script to see how everyone fit together. She’s an articulate, young professional who is well versed in the industry’s jargon and how to behave on a set.

When she’s not working or in school, Ayva loves to come to Larchmont with her family.

“I love Larchmont, I love hanging out, getting ice cream or Jamba Juice,” said Ayva. “And meeting friends.”
