Marlborough senior Gaby Cohen, and Dr. Priscilla Sands, Marlborough Head of School, were honored this week at City Hall for their efforts to locally reduce the use of fossil fuels by committing to convert the school’s energy to 100% renewable energy by 2030.
In July, we reported that Marlborough School pledged to convert the school’s energy use to 100% renewable energy by 2030, thanks to the efforts of student Gaby Cohen, now a senior, who urged the school to move in that direction with the help of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Climate Reality Project.
“I am proud to be joined here today by an incredible resident of Council District 4,” said Council Member David Ryu in his introduction. “Gaby is a great student, who is actively involved in her school. But she also somehow found time to get her school to commit to 100 % renewable energy by 2030.”
“A lot of us on this Council, myself included, were strong proponents of SB 100, a landmark bill which became law in 2019, and committed our state to renewable energy by 2035,” said Ryu. “Well, Gaby has us beat by 5 years.”
“Gaby took action, she organized her school, she gained the commitment of Marlborough’s leadership, and she made a real, measurable difference in her community,” he added.
“Her partnership with Climate Reality Project, founded by former Vice President Al Gore, has made Marlborough the first school to commit to 100% renewables by 2030,” concluded Ryu as he presented Cohen with a Certificate of Recognition of her work, on behalf of the Los Angeles City Council.
