Hancock Park resident Marc S. Cohen was recently promoted to Colonel (CA) of the California Air National Guard in a ceremony at the Joint Force Headquarters in Sacramento. Cohen, previously a Lieutenant Colonel, was promoted by Brigadier General Steven J. Butow in recognition of his support and service to firefighters in the state, the nation and around the world.
In 2008, Cohen, along with his wife, Lyn MacEwen Cohen, founded the First-In Fire Foundation, dedicated to fostering local grassroots emergency preparedness and public safety, and facilitating key long-term relationships between civic leaders, elected officials, citizens, and first responders around the world. Recently Cohen has been working on assignments to assist Ukrainian firefighters in collaboration with LAFD, other California Fire Departments, LAPD and with the California Military Department.
“Over the years, I’ve been given the opportunity to assist service members, to promote and expand our role in cyber defense, to remember our veterans, to remember our lost after 9/11, to learn to be a Chief of Staff in an operations group responding to natural and man-made emergencies in California, and to develop and work with our Federal State, Municipal and Civic Organization Partners in promoting emergency preparedness and the interests of the California Military Department and California State Guard,” said Cohen in a statement shared with the Buzz.
Last week, in honor of Flag Day, the Cohens delivered “Flagberry” pies from Dupar’s and vanilla ice cream to all 15 LAFD Fire stations in the neighborhood.
“The Original Farmer’s Market continues to be an outstanding partner in preparedness,” Lyn Cohen told the Buzz. “Old-fashioned pie and ice cream is both a patriotic and delicious morale booster for our firefighters and reminds them that our community really cares in “the quiet before danger comes,” added Cohen, referring to the forecasts of a fierce upcoming wildfire season.
