Congratulations to the staff and students at John Burroughs Gifted/Highly Gifted/High Ability Magnet, which was named a National Magnet School of Excellence by the Magnet Schools of America, in its most recent round of awards.  John Burroughs was also named a winner of the 2017 California Gold Ribbon Schools Award and has won a Title 1 Academic Achievement Award.

“Our commitment to preparing our students to be college and career ready has never been stronger,” said Principal, Dr. Steve Martinez, “We know that good is the enemy of great and we are committed to continuously improving our services to students and families. This award validates our ongoing efforts to work together as a community, engage parents, and prepare students to be college and career ready. I would also like to give my sincere thanks to the faculty and staff of John Burroughs Middle School for their tireless work and dedication. Their efforts are what made this award possible”.

John Burroughs Middle School has been a pillar of the Hancock Park community since its founding in 1924, and now attracts students from across the city of Los Angeles through its Gifted Magnet program. Burroughs is also undergoing an extensive design development process for a much needed modernization of the historic campus.

“Our student population reflects the rich cultural, language, and socio-economic diversity of our city,” said Martinez. “The Magnet students participate in a vibrant, high achieving learning community that prepares gifted and high achieving students for high school, college, and beyond. Burroughs’ Magnet students engage in a rigorous learning environment and participate in an enriched curriculum offering theater, orchestra, robotics, and coding classes.:

Next month, Martinez will be recognized and receive the National Magnet School of Excellence Merit Award on behalf of the school during an awards ceremony held at Magnet Schools of America’s 36th National Conference, hosted by Chicago Public Schools in Chicago, Illinois, April 25-29, 2018.

Magnet School of Excellence Awards are only given to a select group of magnet schools. Schools of Excellence are eligible to receive monetary awards and are eligible to be named the nation’s top Elementary, Secondary, or New & Emerging Magnet School. One of the Schools of Excellence will also be selected to win $5,000 and the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, which is considered the most prestigious magnet school award in the nation.

To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.
